Rhino tracking in Uganda

Uganda used to be home to the famous big five and it was one stop destination for savanna and forest wildlife as well as birdlife, this positioned the country as the “Pearl of Africa”

The Northern Uganda was known to be the home of dense numbers of rhinos and Murchison Falls National Park was an important reserve for the rare northern white Rhinos. Due to the extensive rhino poaching, the numbers started reducing and by the mid 1980s, no rhinos at all survived in Uganda, mainly due to commercial poaching and lawlessness.

White Rhinos

White rhinos were reintroduced in the country and with the help of the different wildlife organisations and the Uganda wildlife authority the rhinos are increasing in healthy numbers as each year goes by! Eight southern white rhinos were reintroduced into Uganda between 2001 and 2006. Six of those rhinos were taken to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, a ranch that was set for the care and breeding of the rhinos with an intention to take them back to the wild and they have since bred more than 30 individuals in the Sanctuary.

With the existence of the rhinos, an exciting Rhino tracking was introduced and the tracking of Rhinos by foot which brings you close to the rhinos. There are trained wildlife ranger guides who takes the tourists on the tracking of rhinos on foot and this activity ranks among the most exciting wildlife experiences. Other activities on the sanctuary include canoe safari in search of the shoebill stock and other aquatic birds in the Lugogo Swamp and the night walking safaris.
