Hiking mount Nyiragongo will take you to view the active volcano with the biggest lava lake and where the tourists can witness a boiling Magma Lake. Mount Nyiragongo is an active volcano found at the Virunga national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Virunga National Park is the oldest game reserve in Africa which at one time, the park had its boundaries in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Mgahinga National Park national park in Uganda. Virunga national park is home to the different rare species of wildlife like the okapi, Mountain gorillas, Bongo antelopes, lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, chimpanzee and countless birds.

Due to its incredible biodiversity, the park is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The 2 kilometer crater on top of Mount Nyiragongo is the world’s largest lava lake. Most of Africa’s recent volcanic eruptions have come from Mount Nyiragongo and the neighbouring mount Nyamuragira. Mount Nyiragongo is perhaps the only active volcano open to tourism in the world at the moment.
